My World

One world. Two stores.

All my books are standalone adventures, but set in a single shared universe that ties them all together.

You can pick up any book and get a complete story that doesn't expect you to know anything about the world or its characters. The whole series does build up plenty of lore, with returning characters and recurring villains.

If it's your first time, you'll get a glimpse of a living, breathing world that (hopefully) you'll want to explore. If you're a long time reader, you'll be immersed in a rich world with slow burning character arcs and long term threats with much larger and more world ending aims.

Agent of the Crown

Agent of the Crown is the adult series that follows Piety from the start of her career in 1961, chronicling her scars and her secrets as she defends Britain from impossibly malevolent threats.

It’s a world that can be scary and violent, and that has a cast of genuinely unsettling villains. This series is still fun, but fun like a James Bond movie, and has plenty of pulp heroics on the way to winning the day.

Blackhurst

Blackhurst is the young adult series that focuses on Lissy learning about Piety’s world from the classrooms of Blackhurst College.

The series starts in 1967, when Lissy has just turned 18, and follows her as she discovers the magical world, as well as who she really is.

This series is more personal and centres on coming-of-age stories for Lissy and her classmates as they learn, love and live to fight another day on the way to becoming ready to fight the occult professionally.

Fitting it together

While one is aimed to be adult action-thrillers, and the other young adult coming-of-age adventures, they’re both quite compatible with each other. If you like the style and the themes of one, you’ll probably like both. The difference is in the point of view, and the scale of the stories being told. Both sides has real peril and meaningful stories, and treat their characters seriously; just the characters in one are younger and are figuring this all out for the first time.

I avoid having sex and bad language in my books, to keep them accessible to a younger audience.

There certainly is more violence in Agent of the Crown, but it’s the sort of thing you’d see in a pulp adventure novel. The bad guys are appropriately dangerous and the good guys can be forceful in bringing them to justice, but they are always delivering justice and not being gratuitous.

Since Lissy is still studying, she won’t be getting into gunfights with squid-monsters, at least for a while, but she gets into her share of scrapes too. They just tend to be smaller scrapes, not pitched battles with megalomaniacal villains.
